From the side of the Jean Adukwei Mensa-headed Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), even as the foreign observers of Ghana’s 2020 General Election categorically attested, it was the cleanest exercise of the franchise in the postcolonial history of the country and among the cleanest and most transparent of elections anywhere around the world. As well, on the part of the Akufo-Addo-led government of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), there was absolutely no need, whatsoever, for either the party or the government to scheme or collude with operatives of the IEC to throw the electoral victory in favor of the incumbent President and/or his party, as Mr. Johnson Asiedu-Nketia, the dynastic General-Secretary of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), claimed to have collusively been done in 2012 by the extant Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), to wit, Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, in favor of the then President John Dramani Mahama.
Still, it is inescapably obvious that at least the Parliamentary Elections of December 2020 were royally rigged by Mahama-sponsored operatives of the National Democratic Congress, at least in the traditional stronghold of the latter party most of whose polling agents were known to be staunch partisans and operatives of the National Democratic Congress. On the latter count, it is imperative to have a national conversation on the equally imperative need and necessity to scrutinize the selection process of polling agents across the board. There ought to be a neutral selection process in a manner whereby professionalism is prioritized over all else. There is evidence that when Candidate Mahama told the nation and the world that he was putting his presidential-election campaign on hold, in order to scrutinize the way and manner in which Jean Adukwei Mensa and her associates and staff at the Independent Electoral Commission were going about the conduct of the 2020 General Election, it was, in retrospect, to criminally and unethically and openly bribe and thoroughly corrupt Parliamentary Candidates on the majority ticket of the New Patriotic Party, as Mr. Kwame Baffoe – aka Abronye DC – told the media and the nation at large on some radio and television programs.
Mr. Baffoe is, of course, the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party. He is the same young man who has hotly challenged former President John Dramani Mahama to convincingly prove that he had had absolutely no hand in the clearly cold-calculated assassination of the then-President John Evans Atta-Mills. So far, the Bole-Bamboi, Savannah Region, native has only been able to lamely and sheepishly claim that “I did not Kill President Mills.” The recently epically trounced Candidate Mahama has also not said whether he believes or he has any forensically credible evidence indicating that the first Fourth-Republican President of the Sovereign Democratic Republic of Ghana to perish in office had not met with foul play on July 24, 2012 or thereabouts. In any event, when he decided to put the kibosh on his 2020 Presidential-Election Campaign, Candidate Mahama never officially returned, contrary to widespread expectation.
Instead, as Mr. Baffoe authoritatively informed the nation, Candidate Mahama surreptitiously traipsed the land doing what he is infamous for doing best, distributing payolas in the form of mini-pickup trucks and unspecified amounts and wads of cash, largely to operatives and parliamentary candidates of the ruling New Patriotic Party, as well as disgruntled and unsuccessful operatives and waffling political prostitutes of the New Patriotic Party who had vowed to sabotage their own party by running as Independent Candidates. Now, all these forensically credible leads ought to be thoroughly investigated by the legal arm of the New Patriotic Party and the results thereof promptly published for the benefit of the nation at large. This writeup comes on the heels of a fake-news publication in which Mr. Peter Mac Manu, the 2020 National Campaign Manager of the ruling New Patriotic Party was reported to have said that the country’s most recent general election had been thoroughly rigged in favor of the Akufo-Addo-led progressive and social interventionist political establishment.
Mr. Manu has since vehemently denied saying any such thing (See “I Never Said Election 2020 Was Rigged – Says Mac Manu” Modernghana.com 1/2/21). If National Democratic Congress’ operatives had paid sedulous attention to the late former President Jerry John Rawlins, the Founding-Father of their own party, in the wake of Nana Akufo-Addo’s auspicious and unprecedented implementation of the fee-free Senior High School policy initiative, they would have heard Ghana’s longest-reigning strongman cum democratically elected tell the Mahama Posse loud and clear to forget about Election 2020 and be focused on Election 2024, and that is, to hope that the Akufo-Addo Administration would have royally bungled its deft and savvy handling of Ghana’s economy. At any rate, the official decision by Candidate Mahama to put his electioneering campaign on hold, at the same time that most polling results were showing President Akufo-Addo to be far ahead of his closest and most formidable contender, offers ample evidentiary grist to those party apparatchiks who think that Election 2020 had, somehow, been rigged in favor of the presidential incumbent; such Mahama fanatics have not critically reckoned the with fact that their candidate had absolutely nothing going for him, by way of popular support or electoral traction on the ground.
Plus, the unrivaled governance record of Nana Akufo-Addo, going into the 2020 Presidential Election, was globally “pandemically” glaring enough for all who wanted and cared to see to see the same, of course. What was woefully underestimated by the operatives of the New Patriotic Party, clearly, however, was the vicious and deleterious impact of the handsomely underwritten National Democratic Congress’ propaganda fare, especially the Mahama-underwritten Kevin Taylor-minted fake political propaganda blitz that relentlessly aimed at character assassinating President Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. This aspect of NDC’s electioneering campaign propaganda spiel and strategy also needs to be seriously scrutinized by the NPP’s political strategists and amply prepared for ahead of Election 2024.
