You have the freedom to laugh but your freedom after laughter is not guaranteed. That’s exactly what the situation is for Comedian Idris Sultan of Tanzanian.
Winner of Big Brother Africa and Comedian Idris Sultan has had his freedom cut short after he was arrested for laughing at Tanzanian President John Magafuli’s throwback picture.
Lawyer for Idris said he was accused of contravening cybercrimes Act 2015 against Cyberbulling.
The law said in part “……A person shall not initiate or send any electronic communication using computer system to another …………to harass or cause emotional damage.”
The comedian is liable to not less than Tsh5 million or imprisonment for a term of not less than three years or both if found guilty.
Media reports say this is the first time Idris has been arrested with throwing “shades” at Mr. Magafuli as he was arrested for “toying” with his picture.
Regional Commander of Dar es Salaam Paul Makonda claimed the comedian didn’t know the boundaries of his work, hence overstepping.
However social media agitations have grown since his arrest since his arrest calling for his release.
