California has been the first state to allow pharmacists to dispense Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEp) and Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) drugs that can prevent HIV infection over the counter.

Under the new law signed by Gavin Newsom, it is only pharmacists who have undergone special training that will be permitted to sell the drugs.

According to Newsom, he applauds the legislature for taking action to expand access to these drugs and getting closer to ending HIV and AIDS for good.

On the contrary, studies suggest that, the drugs are very effective but many people at high risk of being infected do not take them.
